Application Process
Applications for the 2024 course offering are now open. The deadline for submitting your application is December 9, 2024.
Please prepare a single PDF file containing the following elements in the order shown:
Your application should consist of a single PDF file, with the cover page as the first page. Include the four other parts of your application in sequence after the cover page. Although not preferred, a Microsoft Word document is acceptable if you cannot prepare a PDF.
The file name of the PDF should be the applicant’s name as follows:
last-name_first-name.pdf, such as Jones_Sally.pdf.
The PDF should be uploaded by clicking on the link below..
Please bring a wi-fi enabled laptop computer with you to the course.

Please prepare a single PDF file containing the following elements in the order shown:
- Cover page with your name (first-name last-name), title (including academic rank, if relevant), department, and institution; your mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address; the title of your proposed drug discovery and development project; and the disease area of your project (e.g., epilepsy, stroke, neurodegenerative disease, neuropathic pain, drug addiction, etc.). Please indicate with the appropriate check box whether the therapeutic to be discovered or developed in your proposed project is a small molecule or a biological/non-small molecule (antibody, oligonucleotide, cell therapy, gene therapy, therapeutic vaccine, recombinant protein, blood product, etc.). Please use the cover page in PDF form available for download by clicking the button below.
- Brief drug discovery project proposal exercise. Describe a drug discovery and development project that is of interest to you in a maximum of 2 pages (not including literature citations). This brief synopsis should include discussion of the project background and its rationale, specific aims, and relevant literature citations. Figures may be included but are not required. Please abide by font (11 points or larger) and margin (0.5 inch) specifications that apply to NIH grant applications. The proposal may describe a project that arises from your current work (for example, an ongoing project in basic or clinical neuroscience) or it may be a new concept developed specifically for this application. No preliminary data is expected or required. Your proposed project will serve as the basis for several active engagement activities in which you will participate during the training program.Tips on how to prepare a successful application: This course teaches the principles of neurotherapeutics drug discovery and development. Do not simply re-purpose a basic science grant application. Successful applications will discuss a specific unmet therapeutic need and a strategy to identify new small molecule drugs or biological therapies that could potentially benefit patients. Generally, an in vitro test system or animal model to identify lead candidates will be available, or you will already have identified pre-existing lead molecules of some type even if they are not optimized for the purpose. You don’t need to demonstrate familiarity with the process of drug discovery and development; you will learn this process in the course. This course covers the discovery of traditional small molecule drugs as well as biologic therapies (monoclonal antibody, protein therapy, antisense oligonucleotide, gene therapy, cell therapy, etc.). The course does not teach principles of clinical trials; your application should not focus on research with human subjects. Note: Your application will not be made public. Nevertheless, please do not include any proprietary or confidential material, including proprietary chemical structures.
- NIH format biographical sketch (as described here), 5 pages maximum as per NIH rules. Any NIH biosketch format is acceptable. In the personal statement section briefly discuss your academic preparation and research experience and include a description of the reason you would like to participate in this course and your long-term goals.
- Approval of your participation if you are a postdoctoral fellow. Trainees including postdoctoral fellows and graduate students require the approval of their research supervisors to participate. If you are in this category, indicate that you have discussed with your supervisor and have received approval by checking the large box to the right of the bulleted item on the cover page.

Please rename the cover page with your last name_first name.
To revise your application, upload the revised file with the same file name.
Distribution of students. Academic researchers working at universities and non-profit research institution are eligible for the training program. Because of stipulations mandated by the course funding, researchers working in industry are not eligible to apply. The course is directed toward advanced postdoctoral fellows and faculty members. Occasionally, advanced graduate students are accepted.
